Garage door springs are one component of the system and can be replaced without replacing other components.  Two indicators of a worn or broken spring are (1) hard to open doors (2)  a loud noise .  When a spring breaks it splits into two pieces just as breaking something in half.  And if you're home when it breaks you're hear a loud noise such as a gun shot.  A broken spring can be extremely dangerous so you should discontinue use of the garage until it is serviced. The average cost of a single spring replacement is between $200-$300

The cables of the garage door are supported by the spring(s) and can also be replaced as a single component. The cables use the tension provided by the spring to lift the weight of the door up. Overtime, wear and tear of the cables could cause them to snap and break. Indicators of broken cables include (1) oddly hanging doors (2) doors that won't open all the way. Broken cables just as springs can be extremely dangerous. 

The tracks hold the door in place.  There are rollers located on the side of the door that fit into the tracks and spin and turn as the door opens and closes. Poor functioning rollers will cause the door to come off track and out of position. What causes poor functioning rollers? Poor lubrication and/or excess humidity. If the door comes off track, regardless of an open or close position, do not attempt to adjust. Doing so can cause more damage such as a broken spring or cable.  Rollers can typically be replaced and unless broken or severely bent, the tracks can be repaired and cleaned.

The garage door opener is a motorized device that includes sensors and it determines how the door will open and close.  The opener is controlled by panels that are installed on the wall of the garage to allow  easy access to control the opening and closing of the garage door and even garage lighting.  Due to the different types of opening systems and their components, there are a list of troubleshooting items that should be followed before it is determined if the garage door opener needs to be replaced.  In a lot of cases, there is a programming error or out of position sensors and not the opening system itself.
